What is a challenge to your faith? We were instructed to choose a partner and ask this question to one another in a Bible class recently. At first, I was a little stumped by it. When my partner asked me, I drew a blank and then proceeded to answer, “nothing.” “Nothing” was my initial response but then I self-corrected and shared a challenge that I had forgotten about but that it has not forgotten me. It’s a challenge that just lingers in the shadows and every-so-often will reveal itself in the most opportune moments. Usually, it’s when I am in the pits of self-doubt.

“We eat, we drink, the next day we die,” and that’s all there is to it. But don’t fool yourselves. Don’t let yourselves be poisoned by this anti-resurrection loose talk. “Bad company ruins good manners.” – 1 Cor 15:32-33 (MSG Bible). I believe these words are fitting for our society’s current state as we are surrounded by bad news, fake news, moral outrage, hot topics, and hot takes. Our hearts are pulled into perpetual fear anticipating the next big failure, with a limited view of possible solutions. It is no wonder politics (based on fear, doomsday rhetoric, and outrage) are our religion and those in office are our saviors.

Mary accepted the angelic message that she would give birth to a son conceived by the Holy Spirit. She did not choose this pregnancy but she accepted it. Her husband Joseph does not believe her story (do you blame him?). He wants to be faithful to the law and show compassion to his wife by divorcing her privately. He may have chosen Mary to be his wife but he did not choose this pregnancy. Yet, like Mary, Joseph accepted Jesus as his son despite this unexpected event.
